Infestations of head lice occur worldwide, and the head louse can affect children of any socioeconomic background, and are not related to frequency of shampooing or hygiene.
Safe & Natural Treatment for Coughs & Colds
By: Jamie Oskin, ND
In October of 2008, the FDA supported re-labeling OTC cough and cold medicines as not for use in children younger than four years because of serious and potentially life-threatening side effects. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) supports this and says that these medicines have not been proven effective and can be harmful. A 2005 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report on infant deaths from cough and cold medications reported that 1519 children less than two years old were treated in emergency departments for adverse events (tachycardia, seizures, even death) associated with these preparations. It's a good thing we have homeopathy because it is so safe, gentle and effective for kids.
Simple Treatment Options for Cold, Flu & Earaches
by Lauren Feder, MD
As the FDA continues to restrict use of many traditional cough and cold OTC preparations for the pediatric population, more parents expect their healthcare provider to offer additional safe options during the winter season. As a physician and homeopath, I have the advantage of offering my patients "the best of both worlds."

"When we came to offer care after the earthquake, they offered us a lesson in life"
I flew to Haiti with Homeopaths Without Borders twice. On both occasions I was advised to fill my backpack with what was critical: water, food for seven days, a change of underwear, and essential homeopathic remedies. Even with these restrictions, I packed countless vials of Aconite, Ignatia, and Natrum muriaticum. I wanted to have a generous supply of the remedies for shock, loss, and grief. However, the remedies that I used in Haiti had a much greater range than the ones we relied on after 9-11. This was Port au Prince after an earthquake, not NYC after the fallen towers..
Managing Headaches with Homeopathy
Because so many homeopathic remedies treat headache symptoms, the process of selecting the best fit can be challenging. The particular characteristics of a specific headache provide the keys to narrowing down the choices. The more specific you can be, the easier it will be to find a match. For instance, is the pain left or right sided, throbbing or pressing, better with applied heat or cold? And what might have triggered it, stress, alcohol, heat, anxiety? The following well known remedies address fairly common headaches, and most are included in Hyland's Headache and Migraine combination remedies because of their effectiveness.
Apis mellifica - not just for bee stings!
In most people, bee venom causes mild swelling, burning pain and redness. Apis mellifica, the "bee sting remedy", (honey bee), helps with many types of swelling caused by bees, insect bites, hives or other irritants, especially if the affected area is red and burns.
Dr. Virginia Oram "Trust the process. Trust the medicine."
By Tutti Gould ND
At first glance a person might not notice Virginia Oram. She's not on the lecture circuit. She doesn't give courses. She hasn't written any books. In her own words, she is a "watcher, an observer," and apparently these traits have served her well. Her naturopathic practice in Eugene, Oregon is fully booked.
Doctors Extol Arnica's and Homeopathy's Virtues
On homeopathy in general for sports, A. Dwight Smith, MD, claims it can "Cut healing time by 50-85%." In his article "Homeopathy and Sports Medicine," he also states: "With a minimum amount of homeopathic instruction, most trainers, coaches, and athletes themselves, can successfully treat and cure many of the most common athletic injuries. Their willingness to do so will have two results: quicker and more comfortable healing for the athlete; and thousands of dollars saved for the athletic club." (American Homeopathy: vol.1, No. 6, June 1984)
Homeopathic Remedies for Sports Injuries
Homeopathy comes through with flying colors in the sports arena. The relief of tired, achy, overused and injured muscles and joints overrides the complexity of how this 200-year-old form of medicine works. It is effective in treating everyone from the noblest weekend warriors to professional athletes and is renowned in it's ability to help muscles "bounce back", and in promoting all-around performance in a natural, healthy way.
Arnica for Shock & Soreness
Though we all need Arnica sometimes, a few mental clues underline its importance in certain applications. In cases of shock, physical or mental, Arnica is most important for patients who say, "No, I'm fine, don't touch me, I don't need a doctor," even when it is obvious they need help. Another indicator is when the whole body feels oversensitive, sore/bruised and does not want to be touched. Arnica can also help when injury or shock lead to nightmares and worry. The other key contender for shock, Aconite, is critical when shock brings on intense fear, anxiety and cries for help.
Arnica's Peers in Healing Injuries
Arnica deserves all the accolades it receives, and more, for its ability to minimize bruising, swelling, bleeding and trauma. By focusing on soft tissue injuries, Arnica allows for the use of homeopathy's other great traumatic injury remedies which can be used together with, or following Arnica.
Bleeding, bruising, fractures and cuts often call for remedies that complement Arnica's healing powers, especially if bones, glands, eyes or deep tissues are involved. The following essentials stand out among the many possibilities identified under "injuries" in Kent's Repertory - homeopathy's classic index of symptoms.

Named for the patron saint of spiritual retreats and exercises, the Ignatia tree supplies us with the emotionally and physically supportive St. Ignatius bean. In homeopathic form, Ignatia treats a wide range of symptoms that can be caused by emotional turbulence. Loss of a loved one, trauma (even in the not so recent past), homesickness, broken hearts of all shapes and sizes, long, intense study periods and constant stress are all factors contributing to grief or insomnia. In short, Ignatia can help stabilize any strong emotions that if repressed, can set off a wide array of symptoms in the body.
Hyland's, Inc., a leading provider of homeopathic medicines, conducted a national sleep survey during the fall of 2008. This survey polled adult consumers throughout the country to answer "What Keeps You Up At Night?" along with other sleep-related questions. The survey results below recap some of the survey's top findings.

Energetically Dynamic - An Interview with JudyAnn McNamara
Tutti Gould ND
With a doctorate degree in microwave physics, the notion of invisible energies was hardly new to Judyann McNamara, but witnessing live cells communicating over distance was an experience that changed the course of her life. She was referring to the incident that had set her on a search, a search that eventually led her to homeopathy.
John A. Borneman, III, Founder's Day Address, University of Sciences in Philadelphia
USP awards Jack Borneman honorary doctorate
John A. Borneman & Sons Homeopathic Laboratory was founded in 1908 by my granddad. John was a PCP&S graduate, class of 1902. My dad, John Jr., continued the PCP&S tradition, as did I. Most recently, my son, Jay, earned a Doctorate in Public Health Policy here at USP.
I spent many hours working in our family lab. Even before high school, I worked at the lab during summers, weekends and after school: washing bottles, general maintenance, tasks like painting, weeding, roofing, and in the summer collecting botanicals, (ask me about belladonna), preparing tinctures, making ointments, ampoules, capsules, hand molded pills, triturating and shipping.
Homeopathic Combinations to Suit the Season

Hyland's powerful homeopathic formula is in a 100% natural honey base. Not only is honey traditionally used to help relieve cough symptoms, kids love the sweet natural flavor. Hyland's Cough Syrup with 100% Natural Honey offers soothing relief for many different kinds of cough and chest congestion.
This Season's Outstanding Sinus Remedy: Kali Bich
Kali Bich's (potassium bichromate),specialty is tough, stubborn mucus that sits thick and ropy in the sinus. This sticky, yellow to green mucus is the culprit behind sinusitis, post nasal-drip, stubborn, hawking coughs, hoarseness and pain, especially between the eyes.
by Tutti Gould, N.D., D.C.
Phlegm and flus have been challenging us forever. The Spanish Flu of 1918 had a devastating effect on millions of people worldwide. It also provided an opportunity for the demonstration of how quickly and effectively homeopathic remedies can work, even when the diagnosis was unknown. Guided by the patient's own unique symptoms, homeopaths then and now are led to the appropriate remedy to bring about a cure in the majority of cases. Mortality rates in the 1918
pandemic was 60 to 80 per cent among allopathic doctors and hospitals and three to 15 per cent with homeopathic treatment as reported in Dr. Sandra Perko's book "Homeopathic Treatment of Influenza, Surviving Infleunza Epidemics and Pandemics, Past, Present and Future with Homeopathy".
Winterize the Immune system
by Tutti Gould D.C., N.D.
Here comes winter, and once again patients call upon health professionals to strengthen challenged immune systems. As we know, balance is crucial to all life. Too much rain causes flooding and too little results in drought. Too much food leads to obesity and too little causes malnutrition. Too much stress overloads the nervous system and too little may create inertia. As with any other aspect of nature, humans require just the right mix of life-giving components to suit individual needs.

Ingrid Bekhor always thought that if she knew enough homeopathy she would have a large practice. What she didn't anticipate, was that "large" in her case meant across continents.
Dr. Stephen Messer - An Inspired Teacher of Homeopathy
By Tutti Gould ND
Who would have believed in the 1970's that the future of naturopathy and homeopathy could seriously rest on the shoulders of a bunch of long haired hippies? That they would rise to the challenge and give back to the professions the credibility they deserved? Dr. Stephen Messer was a part of that movement and today is carrying the torch of that legacy, preparing the next generation of practitioners, so that the "dark ages" of naturopathy remain as history.
Conviction at Heart: Interview with Dr. F. McCoy M.D.
by Tutti Gould, ND, DC
The ideal way to live - and to earn a livelihood - is by following your convictions. That's precisely what Dr. William F. McCoy has been doing for the past 34 years of his practice. He could have been a celebrated cardiologist, which is what he was originally aiming for, but he chose instead to open his own heart to the practice of homeopathy.
Endless Learning, with Jackie Featherly
by Tutti Gould, DC, ND
It's always an interesting story how life brings people to homeopathy. Jackie Featherly, a mother of five turned to natural medicine to cure her son who suffered from a potentially life threatening illness. She was recommended to a homeopath who she had to travel miles to see and be committed to studying homeopathic remedies for the acute conditions that her son would encounter between visits on his delicate road to recovery. This is her story.
Essential Summer Remedies
A few remedies from the treasure chest of homeopathy's first aid can help you avoid some pitfalls and maximize the adventure this summer.
Even the most cautious people occasionally forget to put on sunblock. A few basic remedies and cautions can help minimize trauma to the skin and membranes affected.
The Essentials of Heat Risks, First Aid and Prevention
Statistics remind us every year when August temperatures rise, heat can be very dangerous, especially to children under four and adults over 65 and to those with predisposed weaknesses like diabetes or heart conditions. But we are all susceptible to it and apt to forget its powers until it strikes.
Treating Swimmer's Ear At Home Is Easy!
When swimmers come across the itchy, annoying and painful symptoms of swimmer's ear, it can result in a trip to the doctor's office for a round of prescription antibiotics and painkillers. But what people don't know is that many of these doctor's visits don't have to be the first line of treatment! According to the Mayo Clinic (provide link address), self-care steps can be used to treat most cases of swimmer's ear without the use of prescriptions or costly visits to your local doctor's office - good news for those of us who are uninsured or have more important things to do than spend unnecessary time and money at the clinic.
Thinking Positively with Dr. David Wember
Interview by Tutti Gould, ND
Dr. David Wember uses more than mere medicine in his practice, he uses intention. "Between the healer and the patient, it is the intention that counts," he says. Of course, sometimes the mind needs a little nudge, and homeopathy is his way of helping it along the desired path. "Homeopathy is only one way; it has to be health with a sense of love. If you have that communion with a patient, they are going to get better," says the 68year-old physician who has been practicing for over 30 years.
Interview with an Alchemical Homeopath

Dr. Bernardo Merizalde is like a modern day alchemist guiding his patients through the fire to burn the dross and find the gold within them. A skillful scientist, he has been careful not to burn himself in the process, although he has had his share of purification.
Interview with Dr. Eric Udell
by Tutti Gould, DC, ND
Eric Udell is a naturopathic academic. Quiet, studious, conscientious and deeply caring and effective at ensuring the survival of homeopathy. A quiet crusader.... This interview is not a flash dance, but a gentle unfolding of a man behind the homeopathic scenes.
Dr. Eric Udell is homeopathy's version of spiderman; a humble superhero, keeping himself busy fixing problems and helping people, but not necessarily taking credit for it. He is a behind-the-scenes kind of guy; someone who focuses on foundations, because if the building is built on a rubbish heap, it will not stand the test of time. He is keeping the building of homeopathy strong, so it can help people for generations to come.
An Interview with Dr. Pam Taylor
by Tutti Gould, ND
As we follow Dr. Pam Taylor through her global travels, marriages, and extraordinary coincidences, we see her being led into natural medicine to save herself and those around her. Her mission: "the alleviation of pain and suffering" has brought her to the roots of humanity and early forms of Pure Nature Cure. She has compiled the wisdom accumulated from the influence of her father, a holistic dentist as well as from her own experience and that of naturopathic pioneers in her new book: "Simple Ways of Healing" (due to be published in late November). From her studies in medical anthropology, aromatherapy, and work with clay as an accomplished potter - she has developed an ability to have exquisite rapport with her patients. They feel very safe with Dr. Taylor as their advocate, protector and guide. She uses simple effective ways to bring them back home... to themselves. In Alaska and Guatemala she has had wonderful success teaching others to help their own families; this was the genesis for her book. A handbook we should all have within easy reach.
Homeopathy for Women's Health
by Dr. Trevor Holly Cates
Being a woman is full of wonderful advantages such as the ability to bring a new life into the world and nurture a child through breastfeeding. Along with the joys of growing up as a woman come the sometimes difficult symptoms and conditions associated with hormonal development - from PMS and menstrual cramps to morning sickness and then, later, hot flashes. Fortunately, homeopathy provides relief for many of women's common health concerns. Constitutional homeopathic remedies are an excellent approach, but acutely prescribed homeopathic remedies often provide relief and can be tried first.
Cold Medicines You Can Give Your Children
With the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) evaluating the safety and efficacy of many name brand, over-the-counter children's cough and cold medications, parents may feel at a loss for how to treat the symptoms of their children's cold and flu symptoms.
The Homeopath's First Tool Set - The Domestic Kit
Domenick J Masiello, DO, DHt
It is not difficult to imagine that shortly after the discovery of the homeopathic principle by Samuel Hahnemann in 1796 and the production of the first several medicines, a case or cabinet used to house these remedies was made.
Aches and Pains of Autumn
by, Dr. Nancy Gahles, DC, CCH
Autumn is the season that brings with it a plethora of changes in temperature, light and lifestyle. Along with these changes in the environment and in our school, work or social lives, the sensitivities of our bodies give us clues as to the uneasiness with which some of us make this transition from summer to fall.
Interview: Dr. Pamela Snider
by Tutti Gould, ND
Dr. Pamela Snider is the kind of friend everyone wants to have. She is right there by your side to celebrate accomplishments, offering comfort and direction in times of trouble, and providing honest words of wisdom when no one else dares. She is able to transform this feeling of trust, loyalty, love and leadership into every role she has played in life, as a mother, teacher, naturopathic physician, business woman/entrepreneur, associate dean, political advisor, senior editor and visionary. All of Dr. Snider's efforts have been team accomplishments. Her success and satisfaction strategy involves bringing together the best people she can find globally to help create profound changes in the world of natural medicine - whether it's in business, defining naturopathic medicine, and most recently in the editing of a major textbook in naturopathic medicine. I had the privilege of working with her in 1990, when we co-founded the Canadian division of Standard Homeopathic Company. Once it was incorporated and the infrastructure in place, Dr. Snider decided to leave the business world to focus her attention in the academic field of naturopathic medicine in Washington State.
Our world is a healthier place because of Dr. Pamela Snider and it is an honor to tell her story.
Constitutional Prescribing for Healthy Women
by Dr. Trevor Holly Cates, ND
From puberty to menopause, women experience a variety of hormone-related conditions throughout their lifetime. Thankfully, numerous homeopathic remedies can provide relief for the spectrum of ailments such as PMS, menstrual pain and irregularities, hot flashes, and morning sickness. There is a big difference, however, between treating symptoms and treating the woman who has the symptoms.
Mix Mastery: Integrating Cell Salts With Constitutional Remedy Treatments
by Joette Calabrese, HMC
Integrating the use of Cell Salts with constitutional homeopathic treatment is a unique treatment strategy that can improve symptomatic relief and support a more successful outcome. The approach involves developing an understanding of these remedies as a unique sub-system of homeopathy, based on Schuessler's "Biochemic Theory", as well as a thorough understanding of the symptom pictures associated with these remedies.
An Interview with Edgar Sheaffer, VMD
by Tutti Gould, ND
I could have chatted with Dr. Edgar Sheaffer all day. He is a warm and humble man and his stories would inspire any homeopath. We all love to hear success stories; they feed the homeopath's soul and Dr. Ed operates on a grand scale. Imagine treating a whole herd of cows suffering from pneumonia, and having the confidence to stay with it, keeping antibiotics at arms length as the magic of homeopathy unfolds cell by cell, organ by organ until the animal is healthy again.
He succeeds because of his patience, instilled by a family that has been farming for generations. He has an acute sense of observation and a profound knowledge of homeopathy. If we can only stay out of the way, and let the remedies work as they are supposed to, cows, horses, goats, pigs, dogs and cats and of course people can be healed, and strengthened by this gentle form of medicine.
Dr. Ed talks about the remedies as though they are his friends - each remedy with its own characteristic picture. We can relate to them, and remember them through our own symptoms or those of people we know. The remedies are deeply embedded in our bodies and our psyches. They have a universal resonance. They are a practical, cost effective and an environmentally friendly way to ensure the integrity of the patient as well as the planet. Who wouldn't want to make friends with that!

Homeopathy as Part of a Healthy Lifestyle
Supporting the Wisdom of the Body
By: Dana Ullman, MPH
The human body is brilliant, truly brilliant. We as humans have survived as long as we have because of this wisdom of the body. Sadly, however, there is a strong tendency to assume that symptoms are something wrong with the body that must be treated, inhibited, or suppressed. Although this type of thinking may make sense to some people, it doesn't make sense to those of us who have knowledge of or respect for the human body.
Treating the Common Cold and Flu this Season
Treating the Common Cold and Flu this Season

The trick to beating the cold and flu is finding the safest and most effective solution by weighing the risks and benefits of the choices available.
The colour of the homeopathic improvement: The multidimensional nature of the response to homeopathic therapy
Homeopathy differs from conventional medicine in many aspects. Little recognized to date is the unique, multidimensional nature of the response to homeopathic treatment. We discuss this 'colour' of the homeopathic response; altered temporal awareness, paucity of language, selective amnesia, lack of self-awareness, the holistic character of the improvement, and the development of acute illnesses, all in response to successful homeopathic treatment. We conclude that, beyond its biological effect, homeopathic treatment affects the awareness.
