Treating Swimmer's Ear At Home Is Easy!

When swimmers come across the itchy, annoying and painful symptoms of swimmer's ear, it can result in a trip to the doctor's office for a round of prescription antibiotics and painkillers. But what people don't know is that many of these doctor's visits don't have to be the first line of treatment! According to the Mayo Clinic (provide link address), self-care steps can be used to treat most cases of swimmer's ear without the use of prescriptions or costly visits to your local doctor's office - good news for those of us who are uninsured or have more important things to do than spend unnecessary time and money at the clinic.

Thinking Positively with Dr. David Wember

Interview by Tutti Gould, ND

Dr. David Wember uses more than mere medicine in his practice, he uses intention. "Between the healer and the patient, it is the intention that counts," he says. Of course, sometimes the mind needs a little nudge, and homeopathy is his way of helping it along the desired path. "Homeopathy is only one way; it has to be health with a sense of love. If you have that communion with a patient, they are going to get better," says the 68year-old physician who has been practicing for over 30 years.

Interview with Dr. Eric Udell

by Tutti Gould, DC, ND

Eric Udell is a naturopathic academic. Quiet, studious, conscientious and deeply caring and effective at ensuring the survival of homeopathy. A quiet crusader.... This interview is not a flash dance, but a gentle unfolding of a man behind the homeopathic scenes.

Dr. Eric Udell is homeopathy's version of spiderman; a humble superhero, keeping himself busy fixing problems and helping people, but not necessarily taking credit for it. He is a behind-the-scenes kind of guy; someone who focuses on foundations, because if the building is built on a rubbish heap, it will not stand the test of time. He is keeping the building of homeopathy strong, so it can help people for generations to come.

An Interview with Dr. Pam Taylor

by Tutti Gould, ND

As we follow Dr. Pam Taylor through her global travels, marriages, and extraordinary coincidences, we see her being led into natural medicine to save herself and those around her. Her mission: "the alleviation of pain and suffering" has brought her to the roots of humanity and early forms of Pure Nature Cure. She has compiled the wisdom accumulated from the influence of her father, a holistic dentist as well as from her own experience and that of naturopathic pioneers in her new book: "Simple Ways of Healing" (due to be published in late November). From her studies in medical anthropology, aromatherapy, and work with clay as an accomplished potter - she has developed an ability to have exquisite rapport with her patients. They feel very safe with Dr. Taylor as their advocate, protector and guide. She uses simple effective ways to bring them back home... to themselves. In Alaska and Guatemala she has had wonderful success teaching others to help their own families; this was the genesis for her book. A handbook we should all have within easy reach.

Homeopathy for Women's Health

by Dr. Trevor Holly Cates

Being a woman is full of wonderful advantages such as the ability to bring a new life into the world and nurture a child through breastfeeding. Along with the joys of growing up as a woman come the sometimes difficult symptoms and conditions associated with hormonal development - from PMS and menstrual cramps to morning sickness and then, later, hot flashes. Fortunately, homeopathy provides relief for many of women's common health concerns. Constitutional homeopathic remedies are an excellent approach, but acutely prescribed homeopathic remedies often provide relief and can be tried first.

Interview: Dr. Pamela Snider

by Tutti Gould, ND

Dr. Pamela Snider is the kind of friend everyone wants to have. She is right there by your side to celebrate accomplishments, offering comfort and direction in times of trouble, and providing honest words of wisdom when no one else dares. She is able to transform this feeling of trust, loyalty, love and leadership into every role she has played in life, as a mother, teacher, naturopathic physician, business woman/entrepreneur, associate dean, political advisor, senior editor and visionary. All of Dr. Snider's efforts have been team accomplishments. Her success and satisfaction strategy involves bringing together the best people she can find globally to help create profound changes in the world of natural medicine - whether it's in business, defining naturopathic medicine, and most recently in the editing of a major textbook in naturopathic medicine. I had the privilege of working with her in 1990, when we co-founded the Canadian division of Standard Homeopathic Company. Once it was incorporated and the infrastructure in place, Dr. Snider decided to leave the business world to focus her attention in the academic field of naturopathic medicine in Washington State.

Our world is a healthier place because of Dr. Pamela Snider and it is an honor to tell her story.

An Interview with Edgar Sheaffer, VMD

by Tutti Gould, ND

I could have chatted with Dr. Edgar Sheaffer all day. He is a warm and humble man and his stories would inspire any homeopath. We all love to hear success stories; they feed the homeopath's soul and Dr. Ed operates on a grand scale. Imagine treating a whole herd of cows suffering from pneumonia, and having the confidence to stay with it, keeping antibiotics at arms length as the magic of homeopathy unfolds cell by cell, organ by organ until the animal is healthy again.

He succeeds because of his patience, instilled by a family that has been farming for generations. He has an acute sense of observation and a profound knowledge of homeopathy. If we can only stay out of the way, and let the remedies work as they are supposed to, cows, horses, goats, pigs, dogs and cats and of course people can be healed, and strengthened by this gentle form of medicine.

Dr. Ed talks about the remedies as though they are his friends - each remedy with its own characteristic picture. We can relate to them, and remember them through our own symptoms or those of people we know. The remedies are deeply embedded in our bodies and our psyches. They have a universal resonance. They are a practical, cost effective and an environmentally friendly way to ensure the integrity of the patient as well as the planet. Who wouldn't want to make friends with that!

Top 10 Poison Ivy Myths

Myth #1: Scratching poison ivy blisters will spread the rash.

Fact: The rash is caused by the urushiol oil found in poison ivy, oak and sumac and is not spread by the fluid in the blisters. If you have the urushiol oil on your hands and you scratch your nose or wipe your forehead, you may spread the oil and hence the rash. Avoid excessive scratching and make sure your fingernails and hands are clean.

The Integration of Holistic Nursing Practices and Complementary and Alternative Modalities Into Curricula of Schools of Nursing

Nursing as a profession has long claimed the term holistic and has incorporated the word, using various definitions, into nursing literature and practice. Holistic nursing has often been a component of curricular philosophies and conceptual frameworks, as well as standards of practice, policies, and regulations. The adjective holistic relates to the theory that whole entities, as fundamental components of reality, have an existence other than as the mere sum of their parts.

Reporting Data on Homeopathic Treatments (RedHot): A Supplement to CONSORT.

The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine

Dean ME, Coulter MK, Fisher P, Jobst KA, Walach H.
Department of Health Sciences, University of York, York, United Kingdom.

When homeopathy is tested in clinical trials, understanding and appraisal is likely to be improved if published reports contain details of prescribing strategies and treatments. An international Delphi panel was convened to develop consensus guidelines for reporting homeopathic methods and treatments. The panel agreed on 28 treatment- and provider-specific items that supplement the CONSORT (Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials) Statement items 2, 3, 4, and 19. The authors recommend these for adoption by authors and journals when reporting trials of homeopathy.

Homeopathic Nursing as an Innovative Approach to Healthcare

by Ann McKay RN,C, MA, DIHom, HN-C

Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) therapies are playing a major role in the health care of the US population. American health care consumers are making more visits to complementary care providers than to primary care providers, which has led to an exponential increase in use of CAM in the last two decades. One system that has seen such increases in recognition and use, and is classified by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) as an alternative medical system, is homeopathy. It is estimated that Americans use of CAM therapies is at 62 percent, and 1.7 percent of those over 18 years utilize homeopathy1.

She also possesses the ability to use allopathy (conventional medicine) when homeopathy is no longer useful. Conventional (allopathic) medicine and homeopathy are very complementary to each other.

Homeopathy as Part of a Healthy Lifestyle
Supporting the Wisdom of the Body

By: Dana Ullman, MPH

The human body is brilliant, truly brilliant. We as humans have survived as long as we have because of this wisdom of the body. Sadly, however, there is a strong tendency to assume that symptoms are something wrong with the body that must be treated, inhibited, or suppressed. Although this type of thinking may make sense to some people, it doesn't make sense to those of us who have knowledge of or respect for the human body.

Researching complementary and alternative treatments - the gatekeepers are not at home

Vinjar Fonnebo, Sameline Grimsgaard, Harald Walach, Cheryl Ritenbaugh, Arne Johan Norheim, Hugh MacPherson, George Lewith, Laila Launso, Mary Koithan, Torkel Falkenberg, Heather Boon and Mike Aickin

Summary

CAM is not simply a new array of therapeutic tools that need to be evaluated; it presents other ways to think about disease and therapeutics, and consequently new ideas about how research should be strategically developed. In this article we have suggested two ways of taking this forward. First, the absence of statutory and financial gatekeepers for CAM presents several issues that need to be considered closely. Secondly, the structure of CAM research should be different, in subtle but important ways. We have provided some suggestions as to how this alternative research strategy could be structured keeping in mind that the ultimate goal for all approaches to treatment is to provide effective medical interventions at reasonable cost and without harm.

All great intentions, but sometimes enthusiasm wins out over good sense, and our muscles pay the price.

The colour of the homeopathic improvement: The multidimensional nature of the response to homeopathic therapy

Homeopathy differs from conventional medicine in many aspects. Little recognized to date is the unique, multidimensional nature of the response to homeopathic treatment. We discuss this 'colour' of the homeopathic response; altered temporal awareness, paucity of language, selective amnesia, lack of self-awareness, the holistic character of the improvement, and the development of acute illnesses, all in response to successful homeopathic treatment. We conclude that, beyond its biological effect, homeopathic treatment affects the awareness.

Morton's Metarasalgia (Morton's Digital Neuralgia)

Steven Subotnick, MS, DPM

Introduction

Morton's Digital Neuralgia, or neuroma, is described as pain in the ball of the foot at the junction of adjacent toes to the ball, which is usually sharp and may alternate with periods of comfort or dull pain. Associated with sharp shooting pain into the planar aspects of adjacent toes, there may be periods of numbness. More commonly, pain is referred into the medial aspect of the fourth toe and lateral aspect of the third toe. This is referred to as the third interspace. There also may be a neuroma present in the second interspace with shooting pain into adjacent aspects of the second and third toes. Really, a neuroma can be associated with an inflamed sesamoid in the first interspace. Very rarely a neuroma can be present in the fourth interspace. Neuromas usually are present in one interspace only, but may be present in adjacent interspaces; more commonly the second or third. They are more prevalent among female than male patients who are comfortable in loose-fitting footwear such as slippers or sandals, but experience acute discomfort after standing or walking some time in close fitting shoes or boots. Generally, the foot appears normal in appearance.
